This past weekend I had the honor of participating in my daughter’s wedding. It was a wonderful event! Weddings are a time of new beginnings, but it seems the advice everyone gives the bride and groom focuses on the basics such as communication, respect, not letting anger get the best of you, etc. The same holds true for compliance and HIPAA programs. It really is the basics that should be our focus.
The field of compliance has come a long way in the last 20 years. The increased role of technology has changed the way compliance is handled even in very small organizations. Whether the program utilizes a great deal of technology such as policy management platforms, or spiffy programs to find cutting and pasting in documentation, or the program relies on paper policy manuals and old-fashioned auditing and monitoring, it is all about finding and preventing bad activity such as fraud, waste, and abuse.
So, the next time you are evaluating the compliance program to see if it is effective, take a look at the basics to see that all the bases are covered.
