As we are coming out of the pandemic some sectors are “getting back to normal” faster than others. In health care, masks are still required many places; temperatures are still being taken as you enter the building and staff are being tested on a regular basis before they start their shift. This difference between the world of health care and the rest of society can be difficult to navigate. When everyone had to wear a mask everywhere they went it was just something we all did for the good of society. But now that we can go into our favorite big box store or restaurant without a mask and without social distancing, having to wear PPE while at work seems to be difficult for many people. We all want to feel normal, to express our personal liberties and to live life again without having to fear getting sick every time we walk out the door. The reality is the effects of the pandemic will be with us for a while yet. The use of PPE is not intended to be an affront to our personal liberty, rather it is a simple action taken to ensure the safety of our society.
There are valid religious or health reasons that support some folks not being vaccinated, but I am curious about the people who refuse to be vaccinated, or to wear PPE on the basis that “no one can tell me what to do.” I ask these folks, “did you stop at a stop sign on the way to work?”, or “did you show up to work on time today?” The point is, people, and society, tell us what to do all the time.
This is not intended to be a political or inflammatory blog post, or even an encouragement for people to be vaccinated, rather, it is intended to be a reminder that we truly are much more alike than we are different. We all want what is best for our family, we want to work a decent job and make a good living, and we want to make a difference in this world. We all need to extend to one another a measure of grace and tolerance, and we need to consider how our actions impact others.
